dog-collars-made-in-oregon

The simple about is: I am a certified nutritional therapy practitioner or a real foods nutritionist.  I work with people who want to make changes to their health or the health of one of their beloved animals – - – sometimes I work with both the person and the pet for improving health and wellness.  I also design miyo parker dog collars that I make and sell.

I live in Portland, Oregon and have 1 Weimaraner dog called Taylor and 1 extremely bratty Tabby cat called Moxy.

I love to write more than I love to talk – which might be hard to believe for some people!!!

Nutrition, food, healing, fitness and wellness have been my prime fascinations for as far back as I can remember. I got certified in nutrition so that I could help educate as many people as I can get to listen to me!  I created this blog to have a place to write from the heart about the subjects I am most passionate about.

Please feel free to submit questions and comments — tell me what you want to know about nutrition and nutrition for fitness.

I have been making dog collars for my dogs and their friends for many years. I think of them as a fun accessory to my own wardrobe, they seem to make other people happy when they see them on dogs and people kept telling me I should sell them – so what the heck – - – wanna buy one???

Check out the collar shop for our current selection.

Adrenal EXHAUSTION and Nutritional Balancing!

Adrenal Exhaustion – the cause of FATIGUE and FRUSTRATIONS?

For the last 2 years I have been on a mission to save my adrenal glands and help them recover from exhaustion.  I have continuously been amending my diet and lifestyle with the greater purpose of saving my adrenal glands which are SHOT!  This is a very common physical condition that many people are dealing with in our fast paced world.  As a woman inching her way towards the pause – - – having functioning adrenal glands is VERY important.

adrenal-glands-fatigue

Adrenal Glands:  The tiny little guys on top of the kidneys!

Alright so – I have been aware that my adrenals are exhausted for over 2 years.  Two months ago I decided to further my nutrition education by focusing on an area that has had me fascinated since I discovered the concept in 2009.  This German guy William H. Schuessler studied homeopathy because his brother thought it was a smart thing to do – so he paid for William to go to school to become a Dr.  After awhile Dr. William H. Schuessler found homeopathy too complicated and through fascinations of his own he discovered what he called “the 12 cell salts” – - – ie. minerals – - – natural salts that the body’s cells need for optimal health.

The body is so ingenious that when given a supply of the needed minerals the body knows exactly how to recreate balance.  It will get rid of contents too high and will accumulate that which is lacking.  The body is so so so impressive.  Unfortunately Schuessler’s work is not that well known but since I love the periodic table and its workings – I have been fascinated with Schuessler’s work over the last 3 years.

My lack of posting is due to my concentrated studies in this very area of nutritional science and working to correct my own deficiencies.  I am now studying nutritional balancing under Dr. Larry Wilson.  The data used to formulate healing protocols is based on hair tissue mineral analysis.  It is basically a DNA sample that like the rings of a tree – show the results of your body’s mineral analysis.  Then we use the results from the lab report to formulate a specific protocol to re-balance the mineral concentrates – very much like what Dr. William H. Schuessler believed is the key to creating perfect health.

MY hair tissue mineral analysis RESULTS ARE IN!

I have adrenal fatigue – - – exhaustion!  I have heavy metals concentrations.  I have some imbalances and whatnot.  Tomorrow evening I will discuss my plan with my professional mentor who is teaching me along with Dr. Larry Wilson.  I am excited to start a new protocol – especially one based on minerals and the periodic table.  It just makes perfect sense to me, goes along with my interests in Schuessler’s work and my love for how the periodic table works.  For whatever silly reason until I listened to some of Dr. Wilson’s cds – - I just was not able to relate what I know about chemistry & the table to nutrition.  Somehow there was a blinder in my way – now that it is lifted – - – look out – I’m unstoppable!

I start my new plan this week and there are many details I want to share here.  Changing my diet significantly last July was the best thing I could have done.  Now I am taking it to a more precise level.  I have learned so much over this past year and gotten even more excited about nutrition, the body, hormones, woman’s health – - – so much fun!!!

What is adrenal fatigue?

Simply put – the adrenal glands which participate in hormone regulation are depleted, diminished function, shot, tired, beaten down… exhausted.  Adrenal fatigue can affect many areas of a person’s life.  In the most serious cases, the activity of the adrenal glands is so diminished that a person may have difficulty getting out of bed for more than a few hours per day.  There can be a lingering sense of tiredness all the time.  People get ‘used to it’.  With each increment of reduction in adrenal function, every organ and system in the body is more profoundly affected – increasing overall dysfunction.  Metabolic conditions change.  Carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism, fluid and electrolyte balance, heart and cardiovascular system, and even sex drive can all become low functioning.  See Chart Below!  Various other alterations take place at the biochemical and cellular levels (cell salts importance) in response to and to compensate for the decrease in adrenal hormones that occurs with adrenal fatigue. The body does its best to “make up for” under-functioning adrenal glands, but it does so at a price & is like borrowing on your future.

For a comprehensive explanation of how stress and adrenal fatigue affect your health and what you can do to recover and protect yourself visit here:  Dr. Larry Wilson

What causes adrenal fatigue and why is it so common?  Take a look and the little picture I made to show all the little things – - – that add up (DRAWING FROM HERE).  How many boxes can you relate to?  ME?  SEVERAL.

Since I am a student – I can offer Nutritional Balancing Services at a fraction of the standard cost.  I work directly with Dr. Larry Wilson as well as one-on-one with a local and amazing Nutritional Therapist from my graduating class.  I am extra-especially excited and grateful for this opportunity.  It takes the guess work out of “what is best for me”?  “What foods are best for me”?  “What supplements and vitamins do I NEED”?  THIS is what I like about this program.  There is a scientific laboratory that provides data – we analyze the data and formulate a plan based on decades of research and studying hair tissue patterns – it is so cutting edge – - – and yet – - – based in very old sciences.  And of course I love that it connects me back to that German dude Dr. William H. Schuessler.  I like what I’ve read about his style and his mind.

What are the causes of Adrenal Burnout?

adrenal-dysfunction-causes

If you think you may be suffering from adrenal fatigue and you want to know for sure – get a hair tissue analysis done.  Contact me to discuss what it involves.  Like I said, right now I can offer this test at a lower cost because the more hair I can analyze – the more I can learn and get dialed in to the patterns and help people.  I honestly think this system of analysis combined with a specific approach to re-balancing the body chemistry is one of the most efficiently designed protocols for truly restoring health at a cellular level!

P.S.  Ironically there are 2 Dr. Wilson’s that specialize & address the underlying causes of adrenal fatigue and how to address their re-balance.  I study under Dr. Larry Wilson.  The other good doctor is: Dr. James Wilson.

Bodyrock.tv 2012 | Tits & Ass – a Real Life Web Drama

Bodyrock.tv 2012 is all Tits & Ass & More like a Real Life Web Drama than a Fitness Website!

There, I said it!

bodyrock-freddy-turns-off-readers

It has been quite some time since I visited the fitness website bodyrock.tv.  The Bodyrock.tv of 2012 just does not inspire me and I no longer use it as a recommendation to my clients.  When Zuzana was the face of  bodyrock.tv I told every man, woman and teen to go to bodyrock.tv to learn how they could workout at home more efficiently and could no longer use the excuse:  I don’t have time to workout!  I don’t have time to go to the gym!  I can’t afford the gym!  I just don’t know WHAT to doBodyrock.tv used to be a great resource for me to introduce people to home workouts – however, in 2012 – I no longer feel the same enthusiasm to make such introductions.

I have been criticized for commentary regarding the changes at bodyrock and in particular – my opinion that Lisa-Marie - the host of bodyrock.tv does not represent the image of a “Healthy Woman”.  I am a nutritional therapist and work with women 6 days a week regarding their body image & health.  Every client I have is female and wants to lose weight/fat and tone up.  I personally believe nutrition is 80% of body composition – so with education I can help my clients make better food choices and ultimately weight comes off.  In addition to better food choices – I do like to recommend cardio in the form of H.I.I.T. – high intensity interval training and bodyrock.tv provides great workouts for this.

In the past I was comfortable warning more conservative people to overlook Zuzana’s cleavage because this woman is inspirational, has good form and her workouts are great.  I was told more than once that people found her adorable – didn’t notice the boobs after a bit and really liked the results they get from this style of home workouts.  Many of these people no longer go to BR because they feel instead of having a FITNESS focus – this site is now EGO focused and they find it difficult to now get through the product placements, ads for Pillsbury Cinnamon Buns & Kentucky Fried Chicken.  Bodyrock.tv seems to have become more of a Reality Show – on the web than a fitness focused fitness website.  Because of the even more pornographic and sexually suggestive photos in 2012 – more and more old school bodyrockers feel less and less comfortable viewing bodyrock at work (even at lunch) or around anyone they know.  Hiding their fitness site from their children and mothers.  That’s – not a favorable change for many.  Even though cleavage has always been a selling point – the overall feel of the site really has gotten more soft porny in its photos and marketing.  It has lost credibility for many who used to be able to overlook Freddy’s fetishes.

BLAME THE PRODUCER and the CAMERAMAN is all I am going to say!

(besides: superficial ego driven money hungry porn king who takes advantage of insecure women)

I had written a very different post that I liked better than this one – however when I went to hit save draft – - – it all disappeared – some would say that was a sign!  The reason I use the Godfather 3 quote Just when I thought I was out… they pull me back in. – - is because even though I wasn’t liking the new direction bodyrock was going in – I kept going back to the website to see what was going on.  Finally, I made myself stop.  Then some comments came in on my post “Bodyrock not Appropriate for Work???” last week.  Some people do not agree with me – others do.  Recently, a commenter posted a photo along with their comments and I did not take a closer look at it until several days later.  Damn it – - – Just when I thought I was out… they pull me back in.

lisa-marie-bodyrock-sad-lostYou have to understand – I have not been to the bodyrock website in nearly 6 weeks – so to see this photo – - – it was QUITE shocking.  Again I ask – - – IS THIS the picture of a “HEALTHY WOMAN”?

Sadly – I do not think Lisa-Maria looks well here.  Look at her eyes!  I fully agree with the commenter’s added text – - Lisa-Maria looks Sad & Lost -and that is heartbreaking.  As a woman – looking into the eyes of another woman – (we ALL STRUGGLE WITH IMAGE – -  ALL WOMEN) – - – I see and ACTUALLY FEEL the pain and sadness I see in her face.

THIS is what Lisa-Marie looked like the first time I ever saw her November 10, 2010.

BodyRocker Lisa-Marie

lisa-marie-bodyrock-beforeBodyrocker Lisa-Marie before working for Freddy Light.  Lisa-Marie considers her breasts at this size to be “spaniel ears”!  Girl has more of a rack than me!

bodyrock-trashy-porn-site

Today I was on facebook – which is rare for me and gosh darn it if I didn’t see the photo below and totally get sucked in – - – Just when I thought I was out… they pull me back in!

lisa-marie-bodyrock-boobs-hairIt seems as though Lisa-Marie has morphed into the look of the former bodyrock,tv host Zuzana.

The interesting thing for me is – - – I felt like porn was Zuzana’s past – - – her workouts using H.I.I.T. – high intensity interval training changed her life – - outwardly in her physical condition BUT also as a person.  Her workouts brought her physical strength and SELF WORTH, self value and appreciation.  Zuzana’s workout literally breathed LIFE into her!  Watch and Listen to Zuzana in the video Jacked Up Chick Workout!  This is INSPIRING personal transformation.

From where I observe – it seems Lisa-Marie is heading in the wrong direction in the self-esteem and value department since coming into her new employment with bodyrock.

bodyrock-fitness-websiteWhile I was on facebook for all of 7 minutes – I gathered the following comments regarding how other people feel about Lisa-Marie’s new physical appearance - before they are deleted!  I think in summary – the comments mirror how many of my clients and other people I turned on to bodyrock feel.  The focus is no longer on FITNESS – - – it is about egos, vanity, feelings and products – especially PINK PRODUCTS.  I am sure there is a market for them.  I still favor H.I.I.T. – high intensity interval training workouts – which bodyrock does provide – if you can by-pass the drama – good on you!

bodyrockers-comments-facebookBodyrockers comment on Lisa-Marie’s new ‘synthetic look’ – with tits & ass & hair as the focus:

  • You know what? I know it’s your decisions. But I liked you better before all those fake things.
  • i think that by posting ANYTHING on the internet one should be aware, if not certain, that there will be negative feedback as well. i’m not gonna judge her or anything. i enjoyed looking at her as a franklinian Self-Made Woman – she worked hard for everything she represented. what i see now resembles more an artificial doll than real flesh and bones. and it’s not because of the overall look – it’s beause i know it’s fake.  (male)
  • ridiculous. I cannot possibly look at your website at work anymore because my boss thinks I’m looking at naughty pictures or some soft porn site. That is so wrong! Like the comments said above, the new videos are not so terrible but COME ON……..enough with the boob zooming! Freddy we get it, you love her tits. But not all of us do. Take skanky pictures or videos for yourselves in private but don’t pollute your WORKOUT site with them.
  • So all people are doing is commenting on your breasts… What’s the message? Rock your body and be confident, or flaunt Rock-hard-tits? I’m confused.
  • Lisa, ignore the negative comments, those are from women who would kill to look like you…you look great!!! GOOD LUCK ;)
  • I really loved this site and I wanted to aspire to get abs like you, and have the same positive attitude to working out. The main reason I chose your videos is becasue you were one of the few woman on youtube that had a realistic body type and I thought the whole message of bodyrock is being naturally healthy and enjoying how your body is naturally transforming but this new look just confuses me :/
  • I don’t see anything wrong with Lisa’s physical changes, it’s her body, her choice (not for me but it’s not my body). What does bother me is the exploitation of raunchy soft porn like pictures your posting on what is suppose to be a websit…e focussed on working out and improving your physical and mental health. It tells me you value money more than the message you are sending out to your fellow followers that is unless you want more followers who are simply watching verses partaking in the lifestyle. Yes sex sells, but at what cost do you sell your self respect for. Personally no money would be enough for me to pose in these tasteless photo’s. You can still show off your hard work and new boobs without having to literally show them off!!!! So sad that no one posts their scores anymore including Lisa, I guess the workouts aren’t really what’s important anymore.
  • Inna figure and body building competitions do require contestants to where very little to showcase every little muscle. I have friends who compete and I’ve seen many photo’s and none are sexual in any way. If anything they are more mascul…ine and focus is on muscles not boobs, but and whohoo’s. I am pretty sure my cousin (who is a repeat figure champion) would never pose like Lisa in this picture, I see more boob then muscle!
  • She’s a beautiful woman from the start yes. But after that I can only speak for myself and…well…I like long hair and like big (not to big) boobs. And I think a lot of people agree with me.  (male)
  • Quit advertising your boob job and lets focus on the bodyrock aspect. Thanks
  • Nice Tits! (male)
  • no negativity intended, but i got involved on your website for the quality of your workout content and your cute and REAL personality and body, someone i could respect and relate to. the fake hair and boobs seem so unnecessary lisa, you were so amazing the way you were! i’ll have a hard time checking your website every day now. what a bummer
  • I am sorry the only reason I saw this image is because of how inspiring her workouts are and how awesome they make me feel and I am always on the pages for workouts. Nothing about her boob job is going to change that. If you don’t like it then go some where else. You are just hateful. She is awesome regardless for what she is doing for so many people!
  • No one said she isn’t fit or to be admired for that and what she has acheived, or that she hasn’t helped anyone. People are just disappointed over the tone of the photos being posted recently. Fair enough it’s her body, it’s her call in terms of the breast implants. But she is putting herself out there as a fitness role model to the public, and a lot people are losing respect for her because of the way she is chosing to portray herself now. It’s her choice, but of course there is going to be some backlash over photos like this, and she should expect to lose a lot of fans for it. I’m also not impressed by the comments of “spaniel ears” to describe smaller breasted women. That is not inspirational and it’s not an admirable attitude. It’s plain vanity and not something that should be looked up to. She needs to focus more on health and fitness. That’s what she is suppose to be promoting isn’t it? Rather than getting down on her hands and knees with her boobs bursting from her bra. What exercise is this suppose to represent? Looks more like doggy-style than a real exercise. If I wanted to be inspired to have sex, I’d watch some porn
  •  It’s not about hate. It’s about feeling let down.

  • So basically, i have to work out like an animal to be slim and fit, get my breasts done because by the time i drop down to a size nothing, i wont have breasts anymore, and get hair extensions to feel feminine when my testosterone levels are so high i want to throw a chair at everyone!?? LMFAO, as long as her advice works, whats the matter with her looking like silicone Barbie?!

Is Sugar Toxic? The Evils of Sugar Message goes Mainstream!

Is Sugar Toxic?

I believe it is.  I am so happy to see in the news lately that sugar is finally getting the attention it deserves.  The evils of sugar have been ignored as THE contributor to the decline in American citizen’s health for far too long.  It is so nice to see people like Alec Baldwin admitting sugar was ruining his life and he stopped eating it because he was terrified of becoming diabetic.  I sincerely wish Alec Baldwin’s doctor could convince the masses that they too are allergic to sugar.

sugar-toxic-health-hazardSugar is EVIL!

There are so many people sadly addicted to sugar but they just don’t realize it, they actually think they like all the crap they eat that ‘they know is bad for them’!  As a nutritionist – people confess their food sins to me all the time!

I studied holistic, whole foods nutrition and am a certified nutritional therapist -  we have been talking about sugar handling issues, its toxic dangers on health and the body for decades — but we are thought of as Quacks and a bit over-the-top.  Most people just refuse to believe sugar is as evil as cocaine or heroine but finally, the message that sugar is a toxic & evil substance is going mainstream.

As a result of scientific findings regarding the evils of sugar, an anti-sugar campaign has sprung up, led by Dr. Robert Lustig, a California endocrinologist, who believes the consumption of added sugars has plunged America into a public health crisis. (I AGREE)

Is Sugar Toxic?  Dr. Robert Lustig says YES!!!!!

Transcript from the 60-Minutes Interview by Dr. Sanjay Gupta with Dr. Robert Lustig:

Dr. Sanjay Gupta: Is sugar toxic?

Dr. Robert Lustig: I believe it is.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta: Do you ever worry that that’s– it just sounds a little bit over the top?

Dr. Robert Lustig: Sure. All the time. But it’s the truth.

Dr. Robert Lustig is a pediatric endocrinologist at the University of California, San Francisco and a pioneer in what is becoming a war against sugar.

Motivated by his own patients — too many sick and obese children – Dr. Lustig has concluded that sugar, more than any other substance, is to blame. (I AGREE)

Dr. Sanjay Gupta: What are all these various diseases that you say are linked to sugar?

Dr. Robert Lustig: Obesity, type II diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease itself.

Lustig says the American lifestyle is killing us.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta: And most of it you say is preventable?

Dr. Robert Lustig: Seventy-five percent of it is preventable.

While Dr. Lustig has published a dozen scientific articles on the evils of sugar, it was his lecture on YouTube, called “Sugar: The Bitter Truth,” that brought his message to the masses.

Weight Loss: Alec Baldwin diagnosed Pre-diabetic eats a Low-carb/sugar free diet

Weight loss success – Alec Baldwin’s new sugar free diet.

alec-baldwin-twitterWeight loss is not the only thing people are talking about when it comes to Alec Baldwin this week.  The “30 Rock” star confirmed to The Huffington Post Monday that he is engaged to 28-year-old yoga instructor Hilaria Thomas, sparking headlines across the Internet announcing the news.

I am happy to hear he happily in love and equally importantly, in my opinion,  Alec Baldwin deserves to be congratulated on is his recent weight loss success due to cutting out all sugar from his diet.  I first noticed the weight loss when 30 Rock 2012 came back on the air this season. I immediately noticed Jack Donaghy’s weight loss -  looking  much slimmer and kinda hot, reminiscent of a young Alec Baldwin.  Oh that hair.  Towards the 30 Rock ending 2011 it was painfully obvious that Alec Baldwin was packing on some puffy carb-addicted pounds and struggling with some older man weight.  However, in a relatively short time span, Alec Baldwin has achieved considerable weight loss due to a very smart change in diet – cutting out sugar.  Alec Baldwin decided diabetes was not something he was interested in inviting into his life.

alec-baldwin-weight-lossA heftier Alec Baldwin before his recent weight loss from changing to a low-carb, sugar free healthier diet for someone with pre-diabetic symptoms – - – or anyone looking to avoid diabetes all together.

alec-baldwin-weight-loss

I don’t watch TV very often but I happened to catch the clip of Alec Baldwin on The Late Show with David Letterman talking about his struggle with weight gain and weight loss, the discovery of a “sugar allergy” and his doctor’s orders for a strict sugar free diet.  David Letterman was aghast at the thought of a no sugar diet.  No Sugar Diets, What does that mean??? In the video I find Letterman’s reaction to be a very typical reaction that people have when they find out you don’t eat sugar, processed foods or refined carbohydrates.  It’s like you are speaking a foreign language that cannot quite understand.

What do you mean you don’t eat sugar????  (Is it really that complicated????)   I don’t eat sugar!!!  ANY SUGAR!!!!  Letterman responds:  I COULD NEVER DO THAT!!!!  Which again is the typical response I hear from people or worse, clients when I warn them their diet is putting them on the express train to diabetes. My advice to all people on the Diabetes Express is to jump tracks at the next switch, which is exactly what Alec Baldwin did with his own pre-diabetes diagnosis and taking control of his diet.

Another interesting observation I picked up from the conversation was Letterman is, Dave confirms that his doctor has encouraged him to cut back on sugar and that his doctor has also warned him that he is exhibiting symptoms of being ‘pre-diabetic’ and in the same breath Letterman is like, shrug, I’m gonna do what I want, because cutting out sugar is TOO HARD and impossible to imagine.

I applaud Alec Baldwin’s recent weight loss success and most importantly for taking heed of the serious warning he was given about diabetes – A VERY SERIOUS metabolic disorder that far too many people take lightly.  Both Letterman and Baldwin are comedians however Baldwin makes it clear that he finds diabetes no laughing matter whereas Dave. . . appears to have no interest in making dietary changes – - – “by God I try” – - – no you don’t Dave, don’t lie!!!  OR, prove me wrong.  Alec Baldwin not only tried really hard, with some concentrated effort he has beaten his sugar addiction and is reaping the benefits of his current low-carb sugar-free diet.  Not only in weight loss but in overall well-being and livelihood.

The dialogue with Letterman is so typical for a person who is doing the best thing for their health but goes against social norms and the heckling they get from people who really should be following the same diet advice but CAN’T!!!! or so they say.  A diagnosis of pre-diabetes is a big warning it is time to CHANGE your eating habits immediately.  A sugar free diet is the best way to beat diabetes and it is also the best way to lose weight & lose weight effectively.

alec-baldwin-weight-lossThe Dialogue:

Letterman:  Are you prepared to eat this way the rest of your life?

Alec Baldwin:  Oh God, I hope so. . . I don’t want to DIE. . . yeah!

Letterman:  Chuckling – - – Oh, noooo but, uh. . .

Alec Baldwin:  I’d, I’d Die…

LettermanREALLY!!!!!!  They said you would DIE [in disbelief]!!!!!

Alec Baldwin:  They said, I’d get really sick, I’d have diabetes or something. . . yeah, I can’t have any sugar.  ANY SUGAR!!!

I applaud Alec Baldwin for taking control of his health and getting off the direct diet to diabetes.  A warning that you are pre-diabetic and should ‘cut back on sugar’ is no joke!

One of my specialties in nutrition is working with people to make dietary changes to last a lifetime.  Alec refers to it as a sugar allergy, although not quite the correct definition I am glad he considers it is a serious issue.  If  the explanation sugar allergy is how Alec Baldwin’s doctor got the point across that his body cannot handle sugar at all, then I guess allergy is a great description of the situation.  Perhaps if more people considered poor sugar handling as an allergy to sugar then more people would be likely to avoid it easier?  Besides weight loss, other bonuses of adopting a sugar free diet are better health, improved hormone balance, less stress on the body and less stress hormones in the body & a reduction in inflammation.  Notice Jack’s puffy face above.  One benefit most people cannot help enjoying is visible weight loss, fat loss and a natural way to lose belly fat but these are just the outward signs.  Other positive benefits of eating no sugar diets are increased energy, immunity, vitality and sexual interest.  Just look at the before and after photos of Alec Baldwin after changing to a sugar free diet as a measure to prevent diabetes.   Clearly Alec looks younger, healthier and more vibrant since changing his diet and lifestyle and adopting a low-carb sugar-free diet that as a by product caused considerable weight loss.  His lifestyle changes also got him into a yoga studio for relaxation exercises which lowers stress hormone cortisol levels and where he fell in love with yoga instructor Hilaria Thomas.  I’m glad Alec Baldwin took his pre-diabetic diagnosis seriously and immediately changed his lifestyle & diet to promote long-term health and weight loss.

Alec Baldwin’s weight loss is a testament of what taking sugar out of your diet can do not only for your health but also your waistline and face.  Alec not only looks better due to taking control of his metabolic disorder but his life is looking healthy in other important areas as well.  I try to explain this to clients as well.  Clean up your health first and the rest will follow!

Congratulations Alec Baldwin on your sugar free lifestyle CHOICE and thank you for being a role model to others dealing with metabolic disorders, sugar issues, pre-diabetic symptoms and diabetes itself.  Some type II diabetes has improved and been managed through proper diet and exercise protocols.  Make an appointment at my practice if you would like personalized help with weight loss, sugar addiction or managing diabetes!

New job stress ::: anxiety. . .

fitness-nutrition-consultantIt’s silly really but it happens.  A few weeks ago I was perusing online for local work in nutrition.  I came across a specific ad looking for a nutritionist at a new concept fitness facility – I was intrigued. Sometimes when you are looking for work, it is a little difficult to Imagine Your New Job.  I inquired about the position and I actually got an email back!  I got screened and then went through a really great interview process and learned more about the vision of the company.  I like it!!! And then it kicked in – Fear Starting New Job or Starting a New Job Stress!!!

I’ve gotten spoiled over the last couple of years – not having anyone but myself to answer to, or show my work to or. . . take constructive criticism!  Eyebrows raised — yikes!!!  Next thing I know – I was feeling the nerves….Anxiety Over New Job! On a certain level I cannot help but laugh at myself . . . silly rabbit.

I’m pretty excited about this position.  All my clients are specifically coming there to improve their fitness, strength and overall wellness.  They each have regular personal training sessions with a trainer and do cardio elsewhere.  I can’t wait to see how the element of real foods nutrition changes their composition.  Very exciting.

I am adjusting to my new responsibilities and getting myself back on track.  It is hard sometimes to believe how much time has slipped through the hour glass – ya know!

Nutrition-grg-underwear-fat-loss

grg-underwear-crotch-shotsI have been slack on posting due to my intense focus and concentration on upping my nutrition practice toolbox.  I’m involved in a fascinating mentorship under a medical doctor who has been specializing in nutritional balancing protocols based on DNA mineral analysis for over 30 years.  I am excited to be learning more from this veteran and the personal teaching mentor I have been assigned.  So here in my life it has been a big old science nerdfest with me soaking up as much new information on nutrition and healing diets that I can find.

I know how to evaluate people’s nutritional health and I know how to guide them towards obtaining their health goals by making the right food choices. However, I have been conflicted with recommended generalized food items when there seem to be so many food allergies and sensitivities involved these days.  I wanted to be able to hone in on underlying issues faster so that I could help clients avoid the long way to their goals.  There will always be trial and error involved when it comes to personalizing dietary plans for people BUT now, I have very cutting edge tools and laboratory tests to help me make very specific and personalized meal plans and dietary recommendations.  My resources help me take the guesswork out of which foods actually are best for my client and which should be avoided.  I also know which supplements are needed and which are useless to a specific people.  Gone are the days of wasting money on products that are generally good for most people!  Now, I can get very specific within a month of starting with a new client!  I am very excited to see how these resources help people reach their goals even faster.

The title is deceiving – I KNOW!  It’s just I checked into my google analytics yesterday and it’s kind of creepy what people google.  I have not really been over to bodyrock.tv much lately.  People have emailed me to keep me abreast – ha ha…. on relationship developments and a fancy surgery.  I have opinions about these matters – I DO but I’m not going to post them because I might wake up tomorrow to find a comment accusing me that what I write about on my blog is just MY PERSONAL OPINION.  I mean – - – isn’t that what a blog is by definition ? ? ?  Clearly I am not writing academia about LisaMarie’s underpants!

Breaking down Nutritional Mistakes: #5

vitamin-supplements

I’m back to continue breaking down the substance behind the top ten nutritional mistakes people tend to make.

#5) Using vitamins to “make up for” unhealthy eating habits.

There really just is no making up for – - unhealthy eating habits – PERIOD.

I personally have been back and forth several times with myself – regarding vitamins and supplements and whatnot.  For the most part I have never been good at taking a vitamin or supplement regularly.  I rarely finish a bottle of anything.  However, in the last month or so I have added a few items in the form of pills to my daily intake.  I have settled on: 1 Multi-Vitamin, a digestive enzyme/probiotic, Fish Oil and L-carnitine..  Only the L-carnitine is temporary and on trial – the others are staying as a daily addition.

That is 4 bottles of pills which is A LOT for me.  I did not buy them all at once, it can get expensive.  My philosophy is: if I am going to put something in my body – I research and find the best quality product that contains the ingredients I want and do not want.  Like most things in life – not all vitamins/supplements are created equally.  You need to research the brand, the source, all the ingredients and the quantity of a needed ingredient in a supplement.  Some brands are making high quality reliable products and then many standard brands are a complete waste.  Do not just buy any vitamin or supplement just anywhere and think they are going to give the same results – be especially choosy.

vitamin-supplement-mythsI cannot tell you how many times I have seen something ‘like this’ on a person who takes all these pills and things everyday.  They have their routines and they know which pill in this madness is which.  It amazes me.  I have also seen these same people eat crappy diets, drink like fish, smoke and party – - – but overall – - – ‘they’re trying to be healthy and watch what they eat’.  I’ve noticed many people who are on vitamin & supplement overload and PROUD of it – like it’s their protection against disease and they don’t have to do anything else.  It’s their mental assurance/insurance each day as they pick their dailies out of the big ziploc – it becomes their ritual.

I ‘used to think’ that you could get all you needed from your food and didn’t think it was natural to have to take supplements so…. WHY? ? ?  Well, now that I have been working seriously towards obtaining optimal health I’ve changed my mind and my diligence.  I do not think we can actually get all the nutrients our bodies desire just from the current food supply.  I no longer feel confident regarding the quality of a majority of organic produce.  In addition to my adding supplements – I am also figuring out a way to food garden year-round at my house.  This is going to involve the building of a cute greenhouse in my yard.  I also discovered a business neighbor that has a rooftop garden that gets 1000 times more sunlight than I do – I must meet this gardener.  I’ve heard he has award winning heirloom tomatoes and squash.  My point is – upping the quality of your produce is going to provide more nutrients than standard grocery stores, even organic – so do all you can to up your nutrient intake.

Once again there is an element of big business in regards to vitamins and supplements.  The vitamin/supplement industry is HUGE, billions of dollars business.  Word of month and advertising play a huge role in what people purchase and try for a while – usually without results.  At the same time I do believe supplements have their place and they can play an active role in turning health around when the ecosystem is out of balance.  It is an individual prescription.

I do not believe you can eat a crapola diet and then supplement it with fat burners so that you don’t have to change how you eat – you just have to pop pills that cost $39.99 3-4 times a day and you’ll get a bikini body.

For optimal health first start with a high quality diet made up of real foods – organic and home-grown are best, then local and small farmer before big grocery chains.  In addition to a quality diet supplement with a high-quality multivitamin, fish oil or other EFA supplements and a digestive enzyme with probiotics daily.  These are SUPPLEMENTS in addition to a healthy diet.  Based on individual needs a person may need more of something in addition to these basics.  As a nutrition professional I help people figure out where they are deficient/overloaded and create dietary changes to restore overall absorption of nutrients and recreate balance – which may include supplementation.

Breaking down Nutritional Mistakes: #6

common-dieting-beliefsToday I am continuing my piece on individually breaking down the top ten nutritional mistakes people tend to make.

6) Thinking that “being slim” means you are healthy—using weight as your litmus of “good health”.

GUILTY! I would say up until this past summer I was still most concerned about my ‘weight’ and my appearance as my gauge rather than actual considerations of physical health and fitness.

I grew up in the mid-west in a home with two dieters – my mother and my grandmother.  My grandmother was diabetic, overweight and kind of on a diet or going on one or starting Weight Watchers Monday from my birth until her death.  My mother is pretty much the same only without diagnosed diabetes.  My mother has lived with me for the past two years and has lost 25 pounds just by making baby step changes and no longer eating processed foods or commercial animal products.  It is like it melted off without any effort.

My brother was an athlete and I was a dancer – but neither my mother or grandmother participated in any kind of physical activity – EVER.  I grew up on canned goods, frozen foods and plenty of packaged junk foods.  Everything I grew up with and learned from my family and community had to be tossed by the wayside – I had to teach myself the balanced combination of proper real food preparation and the importance of physical fitness.

unhealthy-weak-skinnyMy guess is this person trains and rides his bike like mad – clocking hours and miles like a machine and my gut tells me he either eats low-fat vegetarian or vegan.

This man is SKINNY, no doubt and he can ride his bike for hours but do you see ANY muscle?  Do you see any biceps?  Nothing, nada, zip!  Most people know at least one person in real life that is like this athlete above.  I believe Mark Sisson from Mark’s Daily Apple was like this in his past life too – only he was a marathon runner – very similar.  Mark’s website is an incredible resource for information regarding unhealthy endurance athleticism.  Mark also offers a free primal fitness e-book that gives a step-by-step program on how to slowly rebuild your body into a more well-rounded fitness state.  The biker above more than likely can not sustain strength in any other sport than riding.

I did my piece on skinny-fat as well which is basically this same subject matter.  This is a common one with the ladies.  Perhaps everyone of us ladies grew up with nutty scale-weight obsessed moms or women role models? ? ?  We’re more focused on if we are skinny enough, wearing a small enough size and not rocking the scale in pounds than we are about strength and actual fitness or health.  We all just want to look good – especially naked.

I went back to smoking several times after successfully quitting – always, in the back of my mind – smoking kept me slim.  Inevitably when I would start smoking again – instantly the pounds came off and weight was never an issue – confirming that smoking kept me thin, not smoking made me fat.  So I was slim and got plenty of compliments on my clothed body but I was a stinky, gross, addicted smoker – - – which is NEVER healthy!  Kurt Weber ‘s experience as a trainer found that THIS is one of the classic signs of a skinny-fat girl!

In conversing with Kurt Weber and other people who have encountered success changing their diet and fitness routines and that of many clients – - – when people get healthy and strong – - – they tend to weigh more on a scale than a ‘skinny’ person of the same size.  Muscle just weighs more.  The awesome thing is that muscle requires more fuel to exist OR consumes more calories in a day – SO, the more muscle you have on your body – the more calories your will burn in a day naturally.  I have a whole post on this here! This happens with smoking too.  You do naturally burn about 100 calories a day as a smoker – but that is because your body has to work super hard to get rid of all the nasty you suck in and all the harm it does.  For a mere 100 calories a day – - – any scared to get fat smoker is much better off skipping rope for a few minutes a day.

We are literally in a new world of nutrition and fitness.  We have so much information at our fingertips.  Twiggy and unrealistic ‘thinspiration’ is thankfully in my past & I am seeing and reading about lots of cool chicks who are dumping old ideas and their scales in exchange for barbells and bacon.

nom-nom-paleo-best-recipesLike my favorite food blog Nom Nom Paleo.  I hope they do not put a restraining order out on me for cyber-stalking.  This family is the bomb and her husband actually runs a cool blog called Fitbomb – seriously fitting for this fit, bomb family!!!  Nom Nom has great recipes and is coming out with an ipad paleo cookbook app this Spring – so excited about this.  Fitbomb is a good writer – they are both funny and sarcastic which I love – so if you are interested in learning more about the paleo diet, cross-fit or how combining the two has brought this couple great successes – - – check out their blogs – they’re both great!  They give so many great examples via their blogs on how to live realistically on a paleo diet – with children, jobs, juggling, traveling and dining out.  They live and enjoy life – buy super quality sourced foods – they work hard – workout hard – make most of their food at home – and don’t stress out much about anything or get uptight over ‘the rules’ that most paleo/primal/ancestral – any diet nerd puts on their self – - – these are some cool – smart, talented, inspiring – go get em’ peeps!  {I’m just a stalker – no advertising royalties or free sous vide for me!}

Breaking down Nutritional Mistakes: #7

ADA-food-recommendations

7) Following “government guidelines” or “The Food Pyramid” for healthy eating.  {now the food plate is in town}!

USDA-new-food-plateWhere’s the fat?

When I decided to pursue a certification for nutrition I spent a good two years debating on which program I would tackle after I completed my pre-med requirements.  I had my heart set on Bastyr University outside Seattle for many years.  No one wants to hear all the reasons why, in the end I chose a different program, but I will say, reason #1 was that it really is the best program, IMO, for a person on track to become a Registered Dietitian.  I THOUGHT that was what I wanted to be when I grew up but the more I was emerged in my health care studies the more I realized my beliefs regarding food and how I want to utilize it professionally to help people heal – is not allowed by a RD.

To become a registered dietitian you must go to an ADA (american dietetic association) approved masters program and do a 2 year internship.  It is an intense 5 year program – it costs A LOT of money and – - – there is NO WAY you could work/make money for 5 years.  That is a lot of time, focus, energy and money to spend not to be able to advise people the way I feel is more fitting to human physiology and nutrition as a true science.

Aside from the ADA/government – food/dietary recommendations – - – there are many branches of nutritional studies and beliefs.  I’m not trying to be a jerk here but sometimes, people have a hard time opening up and accepting that – - – there are many voices on nutrition other than the US Government’s OPINION!!!! How a person practices professionally as a nutritional adviser is going to be dependent upon their beliefs, how they’ve been educated and how they continue their education.  In a certain regard it can be viewed as religion or politics – - – there are some people so set in their beliefs and likes – you will never be able to turn them no matter what evidence you could possibly present.

For me the anatomy & physiology of the body are a rather cut and dry, 2+2=4 kind of science.  I am fascinated with how the body runs, functions, repairs, heals, fights illness and how it utilizes foods or gets all funked out because of food.  Nutrition is a science but unlike A&P where 2+2 ALWAYS equals 4 – nutrition is a science that has unlimited possibilities and personal preferences, beliefs and even religion can be a consideration.  It have become evident that although we are all human beings, we are individuals – with unique food intolerances, nutritional deficiencies and mechanical inefficiencies.  Nutrition is not an across the board science – one diet just cannot and does not fit all.

conspiracy-theories-foodI don’t want to get all conspiracy theorist on you and scare you all away BUT – - – - – - – > I like to look at facts.  I like to observe the world around me and take notes.  As far as I can see around me in the US – since the inception of the food pyramid and the recommendation of a low-fat diet, whole-grains diet – - – all I have seen is more health problems and more obesity and I see obesity leading to more and accumulating health problems because of the obesity.  It is a BIG FAT vicious cycle.  Most people have taken notice that health care is a big big money maker.  My observation tells me:  If I eat according to the gov’t guidelines I will become obese, diabetic, depressed, anxious and have lots of aches and pains.  These ailments will eventually make me go to my doctor who will give me pills and bill my insurance.  One day they will buy me a scooter!

scooter-overweight-disaster

Today I do not have it in me to go on and on in maniacal rant about the impact these recommendations have had on world health.  It makes me sad and angry and that is why I got into this work.

There are many components to the new food plate that do not work for me or my recommendations for clients.  Depending on your current state of health and what you desire your health to be – the first step is taking a serious look at your current diet.  Making the right amendments and tweaking your diet to suit your personal make up can bring about amazing results.

Breaking down Nutritional Mistakes: #8

common-dieting-mistakesI picked a perfect time to highlight the worst nutritional mistakes. I am in a tear em’ up kind of mood. So here, I will tackle #8 of the top ten worst nutritional mistakes!

#8) Believing that junk food “in moderation” is OK.

I was guilty of this one too – - – until I read Nora T. Gedgaudas’ Primal Body – Primal Mind – - – she made some poignant statements regarding this nutritional misnomer.  How often do you say or hear something like:  Oh, now I’m definitely going to have to work out later!  I honestly do not believe your body calculates your food consumption the same way you do!

So, when you decide it is OK to cheat or splurge with something you know in your heart is BAD, or – not good for you, your health or your fitness goals BECAUSE – you are going to work it off later. . . you are not doing right by your body!  When you get to the gym later your body cannot specifically find the junk food you ate recently and exercise it out of your system – it just does not work like that.

This was my favorite quote from Nora: Is “occasional” Russian roulette an “OK” thing? MSG is an excitotoxin and always does some degree of neurological damage. Is neurological damage “in moderation” OK? Furthermore, sugar consumption in any quantity is damaging and dysregulating to the system. Some of the effects are reversible and some not.

junk-food-disgustI often hear people who do not have the best diet say – - – “I think everything is OK in moderation”!  I agree with Nora T. Gedgaudas – I do not think many items that go into the mouth and body are OK in moderation.  Chemicals in moderation? ? ?  Not OK.  Trans Fat in moderation?  Nope, not OK.  Dyes?  NO!!!  These things are more likely to accumulate in the body rather than just disappear because it was consumed in moderation.  What is “in moderation” – exactly anyway?

What about something like Peeps or Pixie Stix – - – are they OK in moderation?????  Honestly, they are not.  Peeps and Pixie Stix seem like something most adults can stay away from because they are obviously disgusting sugar bombs but what about all the leeway with other junk foods??? What about parents who allow their kids to eat both of these and more – regularly?

I would also like to note that – it is NOT OK for parents to buy a bunch of junk food products that they know are not healthy for the family because:  that’s what all their friends eat, they like it, they’re kids, they have a high metabolism, they’ll burn it off in an hour – - – NO, no ….. Nooooooo – - – it doesn’t work like that.

Healthy eating habits start at home and children absorb how they are suppose to eat by observing the people around them.  When parents are good role models children tend to want to please their parents and will try new ways.  One of my interests with my nutritional counseling practice is working with families that want to make changes to their lifestyle, their health & their fitness.  Most families have gotten so busy in recent years that basic self care has fallen by the wayside.  All my adult friends always complain about how tired they are – how little time they have.  When a family decides to make big health changes together – it opens avenues of communication and finding new activities to do together.  Varied interests of the individuals grow as time goes on and it seems sharing and family bonding gets stronger naturally as their minds and bodies do as well.  It is the positive snowball effect that I love.

Everything’s OK in moderation is really just an excuse to do whatever you want.

Breaking down Nutritional Mistakes: #9

common-nutrition-mistakesA few months back I posted Nora T. Gedgaudas’s Top Ten Nutritional Mistakes and then I promised to get back to the WHY… these are mistakes – - – I am here to follow through and rant some more – AGAIN – - – this stuff gets me fired up!

#9) Relying on the media, your doctor or even conventional nutritionists/dietitians to provide accurate nutritional information

This one gets to me personally, on several levels.  Licensed health professionals seem to be completely ignorant and holding on to old diet dogmas that clearly are not working.  Look around you – do you see a low-fat diet increasing or decreasing the size of the popular since its inception?  Is our nation getting healthier with the USDA, ADA, AMA recommendations OR – - – are more people more obese and with more chronic degenerative diseases?  The facts and time lines are out there to prove that since the whole-grains, low-fat diet has been the prescribed diet to Americans – - – the American population has only gotten fatter, sicker and more diseased.  AND YET, because of psychology – - – many people are afraid to go against their doctors recommendations.

People are afraid to go against their doctor or veterinarians recommendations when it comes to diet because people expect that their doctor is well educated and absolutely knows what they are talking about regarding EVERYTHING.  Well, please hear it here for the 11th time – - – most doctors and veterinarians take maybe one generic, generalized class on nutrition and they certainly are not staying current as far as I can tell.

If medical doctors actually understand the role that proper nutrition plays in wellness and healing then they would not allow the food that is being served to the patients to be served to the patients.  If veterinarians understood that cats and dogs are carnivores – then they would not be selling bags of disgusting overly processed filler carbohydrate dense pet food in the lobby or recommending ‘special’ dry food to cats in renal failure.  YOUR DOCTORS DO NOT KNOW BEST!

You have to stop relying on your doctors to be educated and know what is best for you and your family and pets.  You can only truly rely on yourself and you need to be educated and armed to do so.

unhealthy-hospital-workersHonestly and perhaps I am generalizing BUT – it has been my experience to notice that people in the medical and health field tend to be especially overweight and unhealthy.  I worked by a hospital and nursing college for over 10 years.  Daily you see doctors smoking outside and heavy nurses walking with sodas in their hands – - – do not put your sole trust in these people’s opinions.

common-nutrition-mistakes

A few years ago my roommate had 2 feet of his intestines removed and was diagnosed with crohn’s disease.  When he was in the hospital being served 100% processed vegan foods I had a conversation with his doctor asking what could I do for him nutritionally to help him heal?  The doctor looked at me like I was an octopus?!?!?!  What do you mean??????  I said well, what kind of diet do you recommend to help him heal and repair?  Again the doctor looked at me like I was an idiot and then he coldly and frankly told me that crohn’s is not something you heal from – it is something you live with – and manage with medication the rest of your life.  I wanted to scream at him and get all up in his face – but I did not.  I simply said Oh!

My roommate did not follow my advice and am not sure of his condition today.

Now, for an especially inspiring real-life food healing crohn’s story head over to the Roost Blog.  This particular post is from the day that was the last day her husband took his crohn’s medication.  It only took 18 months of the SCD – Specific Carbohydrate Diet – to calm his inflammation and heal his digestive tract.  That is actually miraculous after living for 10 years of taking daily meds for his condition.  Food did heal his body and condition.  They too were met with doctors that gave them no options other than a life of medication but the couple sought other opinions until they found a doctor who helped them find their remedy.

I believe in the healing powers of food and using the power of food as medicine.  In most cases diet is responsible for the conditions, issues and ailments and these maladies can be reversed with dietary changes.  My life’s work and passion is to help people discover what in their diet is causing the issues – - remove the offenders and find healing, restoring foods that can turn health conditions around.

This is a photo from Roost Blog – - – restrictive diets can be far from boring, bland or tasteless.  This girl Coco rolled through some tough times not knowing if all her efforts were working – - – but now, she definitely knows —- YES, sticking to the diet plan paid off!  This cake is a WINNER, btw – - – LOVE IT and the blog in general is quite tastefully designed – it is well worth peeking into.

Breaking down Nutritional Mistakes: #10

break-nutrition-myths-10A few months back I posted Nora T. Gedgaudas’s Top Ten Nutritional Mistakes and then I promised to get back to the WHY… these are mistakes – - – I am here to follow through and rant some more before the day ends!  I am going to count back from ten and address each one in an individual post.

#10) Relying on superficial descriptions such as “natural” or even “organic” on labels to determine whether a food is truly healthy.

This is where my concept of false healthy eating comes in.  People have convinced their self that because they eat all natural and organic foods that they actually eat healthy.  Or when shopping instead of actually reading all the ingredients – you just look at the box – notice the catch phrases – No Trans Fat, Gluten-Free – - – No whatever Buzz Word term is popular this quarter.  Transparency! The photo below is a great example of false healthy kid friendly buzz worded foods.

healthy-organic-natural

I do not personally know these products and I do not have any children – I just liked the photo and feel it is an excellent pictorial of what I am describing – see below for the breakdown going clockwise!

common-nutritional-mistakes

1) Organic Whole Milk Kefir: Probiotics are popular right now. Contains:  Organic Cane Juice, Organic Lemon/Lime Juice Concentrate = sugar

2) Baked Chicken Nuggets: All Natural, No antibiotics used, Whole Grain breading, 8 g grain, 70% less fat (contains evaporated cane juice listed twice and canola oil)

3)  Kidz Cliff Bars: Organic Rolled Oats, Organic Brown Rice Syrup, Organic Tapioca Syrup, Organic Cane Syrup, Organic Oat Flour, Organic Peanuts, Organic Fig Paste, Organic Peanut Butter (Organic Peanuts, Salt), Organic Peanut Butter Chips (Organic Dried Cane Syrup, Organic Palm Kernel Oil, Organic Peanut Flour, Organic Soy Lecithin), Organic White Coating (Organic Dried Cane Syrup, Organic Cocoa Butter, Organic Soy Lecithin,Organic Vanilla Extract), Natural Flavors, Organic Oat Fiber, Organic Milled Flaxseed, Organic Peanut Flour, Salt, OrganicFlavors, Baking Soda.  These are bars of organic sugar and flour and nothing NUTRITIOUS!

4) Organic Leapin’ Lemurs: Organic and Gluten-FreeOrganic corn meal, organic whole grain corn meal, organic evaporated cane juice, organic peanut butter, organic molasses, organic cocoa, sea salt, organic soy oil, natural flavor, tocopherols (natural vitamin E). Contains peanuts. Produced in a facility that uses tree nuts and soy.  This is flour meal paste and sugar cereal.  It is organic, gluten free sugar smacks – again, devoid of nutrition!

common-nutritional-mistakesYou cannot rely on labels or buzz words on the packaging.  Always look deeper into the labels and see what it is really made of.  Honestly these food items for kids are complete garbage.  They are just “natural” – “organic” versions of similar mainstream junk foods.  These foods are pretend healthy – false healthy eating.

Processed foods – things that come in packages with several ingredients are the worst offenders.  Read all the ingredients and decide if it is valuable to your health.  Omitting processed foods is the first step in turning health and weight issues around.  Raising your product ingredients awareness helps you make better decisions in the grocery store.  For personalized help with choosing better foods for yourself, your family or your pets or for your fitness goals – consider scheduling an appointment.

Bikini or Underwear: What’s the diff?

underwear-workout-unappealing

And WHO cares?????

Apparently, I do!

I spent some time this weekend looking into how other people are responding to the new February bodyrock.tv workouts.  In each video so far the host Lisa-Marie is wearing GRG underwear and trainers…ummm, only!  There have been loads and loads of comments and of course many are being deleted – - rude comments should not be allowed anyway – & I don’t consider that censorship!

I discovered many female readers like myself who started going to bodyrock.tv when Zuzana was the only host and their recent response to BR matches mine.  At first I thought it was my age – that I was becoming some old, square, grannypants and the new kids running the show were just at a different phase in life than me and I couldn’t relate – because I’m old!!!!!!  I was happy to hear from a reader in her 20′s in Europe who is feeling similar and that age was not actually a factor – however, maturity – is!

and THAT, I think — is the difference between – - – a bikini and underwear. . . in public.

difference-between-underwear-bikiniI came across the photo of the girl in the yellow bikini yesterday and that is what spurred the moment of this post.  I see her as relatively close to the size of Lisa-Marie, not as ripped obviously but they have on about the same amount of clothing.  Later I saw the picture on the right and also thought of the picture of LM on Bodyrock yesterday – - – so, I put together this little collage to show HOW I see a difference between a bikini bathing suit vs. bikini underwear.

In my opinion, each of these girls are basically covering and revealing the same amount of flesh.  The visual issue is:  the mons pubis – - – at least in this photo example.  There are people in this world whose occupation is solely to design garments that specifically cover this region.  The designers for sport and swimwear take anatomical considerations into their design and use of fabric.  IMO, both of the bikini bottoms designed to be worn in public – gloss over the mound – it is neither distracting nor revealing.  In this and other photos of LM on BR in other undies there is definitely a road map of parts is parts.  YES. we all know what’s under there and that it exists!

Anyone making a comment ‘like this’ on bodyrock will be stoned as stupid old grannypants.  It’s 2012 you should be able to handle this!  Ladies, I CAN handle it AND just because bodyrock is FREE does not mean I have to just appreciate everything as is and just shut up and be grateful.  The more I read ‘take it or leave it’ or ‘then don’t look’ – - – the more I am starting to feel like I should listen.

‘True Bodyrockers” don’t let camel toe, crotch shots and inappropriate workout gear get in the way of their workouts!  And……. Zuzana used to ________________!!!!!  I found many women online who like me,  also had an initial negative reaction to Zuzana and her skimpiness – but her sweet personality overrode my closed mind.  At some point people started complaining about Z’s sexual overtones and her cleavage, cleavage, cleavage!  I thought back then that they took the comments into consideration and then did drop the tone down a notch.   Since Z’s departure and Freddy’s gain of full control over the visual presentation of content – bodyrock not only went back to the more sexual feel – it crossed the line into. . . vulgar.

vulgar-bodyrock-photosEver since this photo was posted – I have not been able to take the site seriously.  Who is the target market???  Me, or that creepy sexual predator dude???  From here it just kept going downward on the motivating scale for me, and then came February – 30 days of UWODs…. underwear workout of the day.  [Don't get your panties in a wad]! I am feeling extra snarky today so I’m just going to say it – - – even in a leap year, which it is – - – you cannot have a 30 days challenge in the month of February!

So back to base, I like to be open-minded and I like to be surprised and knocked down when people are not what I thought at first.  Zuzana is the epitome of this for me.  I have enjoyed watching Zuzana rise up so to speak.  People make horrible comments about her past.  The past is in the past – it is what is happening in the present that matters.  I like the course Z is on and her new ZWOW’s are fitness focused.  I just had this visual montage of BR photos since the harlequin bra workout – it has been very prop heavy: underwear, tutus, trainers, poses, balls, PINK pink things – - – it is not the bodyrock of yesteryear!

Well – - – I still have a lot to be grateful for — to - bodyrock.tv — it has given me so many ideas and it showed me a new way to workout that I had not explored yet.  I also love the archive library.  It is a wonderful workout reference center that is valuable to anyone interested in body-weight exercises – and THAT is why I keep going back.

In a certain regard I get that it shouldn’t matter what someone is wearing or who the trainer is – working out is what is most important – - however, as cool and hip and open and modern as I want to be – - – I CANNOT get past the indecency factor of the new bodyrock productions sans Z.  It is not what is used to be to me – it does not do the same thing for me – it does not provoke the same inspiration and admiration for me.

And another thing – - – I feel like people are saying – hey, she can wear whatever she wants BECAUSE – she is extremely ripped and worked hard to get that body – - – forgo decency and dignity – wear underwear – it’s super cheap, cute, colorful – new workout gear… emphasis on the cheap! Well now, they are in the Turks & Caicos – on the beach, in public and she is still in her GRG underoos!  So, in 2012 am I to loosen up and get ready for underwear to now be acceptable beachwear?

I think if you want to be taken seriously in your profession you have to dress the part.  If your chosen career includes presenting your body publicly up close and personal you need to take a little extra time to make sure your gear suits your activity.  Bodyrocker Jess doing the “Fit Ass Exercise Challenge” in leg warmers, big ass earrings and garish make-up – instantly killed her career.

So THAT, is my PMS take on ~ What’s the difference between a bathing suit and underwear!!!!!  Thickness, appropriateness, intended use, public vs. private, worn alone – - – etc!!!!!!

zuzana-bikini-beach-bodyappealing — attractive — appropriate!

{but her eyes are creeping me out!!!!! – only noticed that after posting it}

home-window-food-gardensfoo-window-farms-kickstarterI am working on a personal venture at the moment and have decided to put together a Kickstarter campaign to raise start-up funding.  If you are not familiar with Kickstarter – I do suggest you check it out.  Not only is ‘it’ a cool idea, there are some incredible and inspiring ideas on the site.

The basics of Kickstarter is – you have an idea and a plan – you design a proposal to raise funding for your project and you create a page.  They’re calling it “crowdfunding” – - – I think utilizing social media is key.  PLEASE, tell all your friends dear Faberge!  {OK, so in checking the spelling what do I see:  Faberge Organics the father of Social Media… you heard it here last}!!!!  It is an online pledge system and the pledges are collected through amazon payments.  Kickstarter takes 5% of the funds raised; Amazon charges an additional 3-5%.  When you have a good idea but need start-up funding, I think it is worth a shot to try.

I was especially impressed with some innovative urban farming ideas.  Freight Farms and Window Farms definitely both got me thinking about my own situation.  I want to grow my own food BUT. . . I live in a valley of no real powerful sun.  This is my year to design a solution.

hydroponic-urban-window-farmsI love the idea of the window farms in offices, schools and restaurants.

If you have any cool food and farming ideas you’d like to share – please leave a comment below.  If you know any secrets to cave dwelling food farming – - – please point me in the direction of sustainable shade food farming.

Xbox Kinect = Fun & Fitness

xbox-kinect-fitness-funThis past weekend after waiting hours while watching my friend finish a photoshop design project – for his JOB – - – for a famous Director (whose email I now know!) – - – we enjoyed a fantastic dinner and then went back to his apartment so he could show me his xbox kinect!  We’ve known each other for a long time – I knew he would not build me up for something that would not provide…. and provide it did!

xbox-kinect-fun-adventuresAfter getting recognized by the weird purple light – - – doing what the TV screen told me to do – - – I had my avatar and was good to go on game one.  It was a combination of solo dodge-ball and a carnival throw the ball and knock stuff down kind of thing.  It was a good warm up but not that interesting.  The next game I picked from the menu was this rafting game you see above.  You are cruising down some fast moving water and your goal is to collect coins or something.  This game reads your body movements so if you want higher points – - – you have to jump and move around.  It’s AWESOME!  I’m serious, maybe not for an all day affair but for a fun hour with a friend – - – yea, it was a blast.  And I’m telling you – I felt fitness potential with this.  It felt like a HIIT – Interval training workout!

What makes it Fun & Fitness is that you have to be aware and pay attention to what is in front of you – - – as if you are moving through the space.  There are many obstacles to throw you off – which gives you the opportunity to work your body – and as far as collecting points against your friend goes – - – well – - – the faster and more agile you are the better!  My other favorite was this conveyor belt type obstacle course where you have to jump and duck and move side to side – - – I really rocked that one!  ha ha ha!!!  It gave me ideas and I definitely think there is more potential for Fun & Fitness with kinect!

The xbox kinect games we played were very silly to play – - – but we were both always winded after we did a round.  Plus we just couldn’t stop laughing so that provided some extra ab work for sure.  We had so much fun – just laughing and being silly – - – and getting ourselves a little xbox after-dinner workout!  Oh – and – - – it randomly takes your pictures while you’re ‘competing’ as well.

xbox-kinect-home-fitness

OK so….. this is not anyone I know – - – please click on the photo to see more of this man on flickr! And seriously look at the air he is clearing!  I’m being completely serious when I say I think there is potential for fun & fitness here.

I am not sure if I have written about this before but I personally find the bodies of female beach volleyball players to be the most attractive.   I decided a few months back that the body conditioning from this sport creates the sexiest female shape – - – in my opinion.  In my made-up home workout routines I do, I started incorporating movements that I think are repetitive in this sport.  I was pretty excited to see kinect has a beach volleyball game in its Sport package!

Bodyrock not Appropriate for Work???

women-fitness-nutritionCall me a relic, call me what you will
Say I’m old-fashioned, say I’m over the hill

Seriously – - – you can’t watch bodyrock.tv videos while you are at WORK anymore???  UNBELIEVABLE!!!  I cannot tell you how many times I have read this on the internet lately.  Call me a beotch call me what you will – - – but are people seriously UPSET that they can no longer watch PERSONAL workout videos on the J.O.B. because…either it is filtered as adult material OR one of your co-workers might think you’re on a PORN site!

Did you ever think for one moment that your co-worker doesn’t really care if it is porn or amazon just do some work and stop dicking around on the internet?!  I’m sorry but it bothers me that people feel ENTITLED to be able to watch videos and surf the net at WORK.  Bodyrock.tv IS inappropriate for the workplace but not ONLY because of the content and the soft-porn pics.  If you cannot make it through the workday without your fix don’t get UPSET, get an ipad or smart phone and watch it on your lunch hour… on your personal time.

fitness-nutrition-womens-wellnessNext up – this past week bodyrock posted a photo of Lisa-Marie on top of a table in a runner’s start position.  My stomach dropped to the floor – like when you are on a roller coaster and you’re not sure for a moment if you might hurl a little or not.  I was AGHAST!  Her legs are so small.  The most recent pictures of her on bodyrock broke my heart.

lisa-marie-bodyrock-hostPeople are for sure up in arms over the underwear workouts… (p.s. What’s the difference between underwear and a bikini? ? ? about .5mm of fabric? ? ?  I don’t know the measurement BUT. . . swimwear is THICKERer!!!)

I’m on team less crotch shots!

A reader and I had a recent conversation about my stomach weakness after seeing LM after the 30 days challenge.  The reader expressed how having LM as THE host for BR is unfortunately promoting an unhealthy model of fitness.  I have seen many comments from women and men alike who LOVE LOVE LOVE the way LM looks.  They like the look of her visible iliac veins.  People want to know her diet because they want to look like she does.  LM’s physique now makes me feel uneasy in my belly.  It does not inspire me as an image of HEALTHY WOMAN.  It’s not personal ‘against’ LM – it’s just how my gut reacts now.

after-bodyrock-photoThis is one of my favorite bodyrocker photos – to me, this photo expresses a very natural, HAPPY, healthy, enjoying life, smiling – - – Fit and…. va va voom!  I’d love to be able to rock a bikini bottom like that!  (small as well in all capacities – - – it’s  just a different small and a different angle and different focal point!!!)

What does your vision of healthy look like?

Zuzana agrees with ME! Sneaky Fitness Tips!

zuzana-homework-movement-fitnessHello!  I would genuinely like to thank every person who has visited my blog and to all the wonderful people who have been returning, commenting and interacting with me.  The month of January made me feel like I’m not the crazy lady standing in corner talking to myself ~ THANK YOU!

The other day I posted a silly little post “I love my gymboss timer!” BECAUSE I do.  AND, I like do random exercises here and there. . . and in doing my own Google searches I found other women who like to do them too. . . and THEN. . .Zuzana posted her new video – - – - Guess what she talks about! Finding ways to sneak in body-weight exercises in your time-pressed days!

10 Push-Ups

30 Jump Lunges

2 minutes X 8 times a day = 80 push ups and 240 Jump Lunges = 16 minutes of workout in a day

jump-lunge-bodyrockYou can visit bodyrock.tv here to read more about the benefits of Jump Lunges and how to maintain proper form!

zuzana-homework-movement-fitness

If I had a dollar for every time I heard: I DON’T HAVE TIME to workout! {Including from myself!!} – - – I’d have a better wardrobe!!!!!!  It is sometimes hard to START improving your health and fitness but Don’t Give Up! I’ve read posts all over the internet about people who took months to start DOING bodyrock.tv but kept going back and watching the videos until one day they got up and started.  I AM ONE OF THESE PEOPLE!  I am not to where I want to be yet in my strength or body composition . . . but I keep going because I KNOW stopping is not going to bring me results.  I both see and feel changes.  I have gotten enough unsolicited feedback from people to know that even though my jeans are ‘more snug’  – - – they fit better in places & something, is different about me that is viewed in a positive and healthy light.  You just have to keep going because for sure, stopping will not bring results!

Z talks from the heart about a few subjects I have written about recently as well.  Sometimes you just can’t fit in a real workout – sometimes, you don’t want to.  Sometimes you want a little more.  Doing random exercises works and they count!

I think Zuzana looks the most beautiful I have ever seen here in this particular video.  She has some kind of special glow going on and a softness.  Zuz just keeps getting better with age and time!  She continues to pick herself up and move forward and encourage & motivate others while just being herself, it seems.  She let’s people who share her struggles know that they are not alone – she let’s you FEEL that your behavior is normal and how to push through it all. Life happens, life gets in the way – it’s how you manage the curve balls we all experience in our own way that makes the long-term differences and improvements.

My ZWOD: My Buns Hurt WO!

home-workout-movement-gymbossWaiting on the edge of my seat the last few days – my gmail inbox remained without notice of a NEW ZWOD – drats!  It was only moments ago that Zuzana’s ZWOD II was posted online on her new youtube channel.  So you can check it out!

Yesterday I ended up on this older workout of the day with ole’ Zuzana and I loved it.  I have been out of commission for the last 13 days which has been quite sucky but doing this WO made me feel alive and kickin’ again.  When I did the workout yesterday I did not see the video so I did the workout from the step-by-step photos HERE!  Today while preparing for this post – - – I watched the video.  I notice now that my form was off for the Sandbag Lunge Back Press Up & Squat Leg Lift – I did not do the second squat properly which is why my score is better than it should have been.  Oh well – I loved the kick-ups part.  Z’s workouts are just so fun – I am happy there are so many old workouts to choose from.

How does she workout in a tube-top? Oh Zuzana!

Part 1:  3:25  / Part 3:  3:56  /  Part 4:  I had to modify my movements in order to keep moving the whole time.  It did make my buns hurt and it felt awesome at the end when my timer was beeping — YOU’RE DONE!!!!!!!  It was nice to see Z felt the same way… How many more rounds?????

Thank you Z for another great WOD!

I love my gymboss timer!

gymboss-tabata-timerFor years I was on the search for an interval timer watch for when I would do my Terraining© on the trails of Forest Park but I never found the right one.  When I discovered Zuzana, charliejames1975, on youtube she had this little clip on interval timer that she raved about.  I checked out the gymboss website and ordered the silver version.  I love me my gymboss timer.  It is light-weight, clip-on, easy to operate and it has all the functions I was looking for – for only $20!

My friend didn’t realized I had the gymboss timer and texted me to tell me about a tabata timer app she got for her iphone.  If you have an iphone already you can definitely get a free tabata timer and I’ve recently seen posts on bodyrock that gymboss does offer a free timer app.  The reason I prefer my timer is simply because it is light-weight and I can clip it on my person – my iphone needs a pocket and it’s clunky. . . and – - – I like to use it in the kitchen when I am cooking and baking.  I don’t want to get my iphone dirty!!!!

I like to use my timer when I am in the kitchen when waiting for things to catch up to each other.  I am personally a fan of 10/30 splits.  During bodyrock’s 12 days of Christmas I did several 4 minute mini workouts in my kitchen.  I also make up routines in the moment from past workouts.  It’s SILLY and the people and animals in my house think I’m nuts!!!!!  BUT. . . it is perfect way to multi-task some glute lifts and cook a good meal at the same time!

home-workout-movement

kitchen-bodyweight-exercisesThank you Stacy from The Best Life Ever!

Sometimes life gets in the way of our best intentions – - time is a precious commodity these days – - so make the best use of your ‘free’ time.  Find slots where you can fit body-weight exercises into your day.  Mini-exercise challenges.  Do squats while you are brushing your teeth.  Some days I like to turn on Reggaeton and my gymboss timer and just HAVE FUN – dancing, being silly – - – but incorporating movements I’ve learned through watching Zuzana workout in bodyrock videos — but I do it at set intervals for set amounts of time.  It’s silly, but fun – - -  and it’s something that helps me stay on my fitness target!

I was happy to find Stacy’s post expressing she likes to do it too!  It’s a great way to get SOMETHING in everyday!

As I’ve mentioned before, I love to do random exercises. A set of push-ups here, ten squats over there, and always random high kicks whenever I’m in a space where there is enough room.  ~ Stacy

Do you have any secrets for sneaking in mini-workouts when you’re pressed for time? OR – - – waiting for something or someone?

She’s Back – – ZWOD with Zuzana’s Preview Video

The announcement came this week that Zuzana – aka ZuzkaLight is returning to youtube with some new kick-your-ass home workouts!  I’m personally very excited and I know many out there in internet land are feeling the same this weekend!

I LOVE this new ‘preview’ – it’s hot!  Z is so fierce and prime in this sequence – it makes me want fitness and strength. I find this clip of Zuz especially motivating and will probably watch it a bunch more.  It’s like Rocky for girls!  I hope it inspires you too!

Zuzana is back! Zuzka-Light’s ZWOD

Where IS Zuzana? that has been a popular question on bodyrock.tv over the last couple of months.  No one associated with boodyrock.tv would even hint about what she had been up to lately or when she would be returning to the screen with nutrition tidbits (as ‘promised!) – - – people in the comments section got quite bitchy without their coffee talk.  The negative commenting started to drag on me after awhile.  I’ve mentioned here in several posts that Zuzana (also known as Zuzka Light) is my fitness mentor.  There is just something about her persona and I have missed it DEARLY!

zuzana-is-back

Yesterday Zuzana announced on her new youtube channel, ZuzkaLight, that she has decided to comeback and start making workout videos again.  She is calling them ZWOD!  Zuzana’s Workout of the Day! and I am very excited about this news of the day!  THRILLED!

The new workout format is in real-time.  Z has not been working out over the last couple of months so we get to see how to push our self as she is demonstrating.  I liked that she showed her actual workout – it was very helpful to watch her form and where it hurt and how she rests.

Today was the first ZWOD!  It is in real-time and we can see how she works out to fatigue.  She’s so cute too!  “I’m not giving up! You’d have to kill me”!!!! She says she’s put on a few pounds and you can see she has lost some strength a speed. Once again sharing with us her real person & her real struggles.  I knew I missed her but now that she is back – - – it’s just a good thing!  She has a new energy about her. I enjoyed the format and I really like the ending sequence. There you can really see the difference in her between then and now. This is an exciting journey and you can do it too!

For all the people who wonder – - – how do I start?  Where do I start?  NOW!!!! Now is the best time to start working out with Zuzana.  START here with the two videos below. You can find modifications to the actual exercises on youtube or bodyrock.

When I first came across Zuzana and her workouts she was in tip-top shape and she worked out like a powerhouse – with ease! It can be a little intimidating!  She obviously still looks amazing and she is still hella strong – - – but she’s struggling more than ‘normal’ and that’s how it really feels for me.  I feel weak sometimes and ponder thoughts that I am not going to get stronger. I KNOW Zuzana will achieve her goal so if you follow along – you might too!! When I see her push through in today’s ZWOD it gives me a boost too – it makes me excited about doing the workout tomorrow and pushing myself when I think I can’t go on.

The boost – the drive – - THAT’S what I’m talking about when I go on and on about Zuzana!  That’s what I’ve been missing.  I’ve missed the “bump-up” she gives me when she leads by example and she shows her personal side!  I’m so happy she is back and I look forward to watching this next adventure with her unfold.  I’m excited to start her new ZWODs and get results – - – how about you???

[Enquiring Minds want to know! Here's what I know: Once upon a time Zuzana and her soon-to-be-ex-husband Frederick Light started bodyrock.tv together and their website has been instrumental in the "Home Workout Movement"! Awesome!!! In the Fall of 2011 they announced that they were ending their marriage - Z intended to focus on nutrition and they were going to change things up for the 'even' better. Clearly sometime in November? - - - that plan spoiled and things at bodyrock.tv started to change - - - without Zuzana - or any word from or about Zuzana. I have been waiting it out and hoping for the best . . . Several 'things' have happened on bodyrock the last couple weeks since Zuzana resurfaced on her own. Things that make ya' go - hmmmm?!?!?! Furrowed brow! There are 13 million different points of view. As of midnight last night, I would say they have parted ways. When I went to the bodyrock website this morning Z's photos were stripped from the sidebars - - - makes sense really, right?! Then, there is now censorship of bodyrocker comments - after approvals - especially if it gets too many likes???? So anyway - - that's the gossip. Moving on!]!

False Healthy Living

It took me like an hour to come up with this post title.

Before I started my nutrition certification program I would say that if you had asked any one of my friends or co-workers they would have described me as a health conscious person who was into eating healthy.  I was the go to person people came to for advice regarding natural health management and eating well or my opinion on a certain product or diet.  In a certain regard it is like being a teenager. . . back then I thought I knew everything only later to discover there is a much bigger world out there.  In the last 3 years my opinions on food, health and longevity have drastically changed.

When I was living a false-healthy lifestyle I actually had myself and others convinced that I was smart eater.  However, in reality, I ate things all the time that were not actually healthy.  I allowed lots of ‘cheat’ items and I was under the impression for a long time that I could compensate in other ways here and there for eating JUNK!  I was also good at justifying treats and celebrating with sweets!

The picture below is a fairly accurate representation of something I would have picked up at the grocery store for lunch or dinner.  At a glance it gives off the impression that it is ‘healthy’ – broccoli, quinoa, spinach and whole grain bread!  But, if you were to closely examine the ingredients used to make these items you might be surprised to discover how ‘unhealthy’ this portrait of healthy food actually is.

false-healthy-foods

(These items were purchased from a popular upscale healthy market where canola oil is still being used in a majority of prepared foods.  Canola Oil is not a good oil for health – for more information read The Great Conola Story).

We all make food choices several times everyday.  Who you live with and surround yourself with will usually have an influence on these choices.  In all manner of speaking my life is entirely different than it was just 2-3 years ago.  There is some good, bad and ugly all inner-woven that contributed to my life becoming comparably different today than when we started 2009.  Back then I was a shopping for a single girl, vegetarian, I smoked ~ organic cigarettes, I swear!  (eyeroll + sigh) — and to be perfectly honest most of my food came in little brown take-out containers either from good restaurants or fancy upscale grocery stores.  Prepared dishes things, salads – you know, healthy stuff like above!  When I was a single woman, living alone too often I wasted food at an unconscionable rate and that always made me feel guilty & bad.  All my good intentions of cooking meals and bringing my own lunches always fell by the wayside… bummer. I cannot recall when it happened but one day I basically decided to stop buying groceries and I just picked up meals and snacks from establishments.  I also ate out A LOT, a lot with friends – breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Eventually I grew tired of every restaurant and every grocery store’s prepared food selection – - (I am thankful for this)!   And then. . . at the end of 2009. . . my mom moved out west from Michigan and now lives with me – - – (and that is how I came to be no longer ‘single’ and living alone!)!

In the beginning of 2010 I turned 40.  Thankfully I was in school and I was excited to get my certification and I also thoroughly enjoyed the program!  I made a promise to myself to quit smoking by June 5th – graduation day.  In February, Nora T. Gedgaudas – lectured to my class and her words landed heavily on me.  Some of her experiences or ways in which her life unfolded felt familiar to me.  I felt a kinship with her passions regarding science, nature,  history  and medicine.  She is older than me and about a decade more learned – - – (how do you say that?) – - – with her own life experiences that have given her front row seats to failures of western medical wisdom and the low-fat, whole grains dogmas.  Certain ideas that Nora talked about in class and her book continuously resurfaced in my thoughts often over the next year.  When Nora published her revised edition of Primal-body Primal-mind last year – I could no longer ignore what I knew about food and make exceptions to suit my fancy.

diet-fitness-linesI had to draw the proverbial line in the sand.  I realized I needed to stop TRYING and actually start DOING!  I stopped making exceptions.  I stopped thinking of ‘junk food’ – ‘bad food’ – ‘desserts’ – - – gelatinous glutenous gratuitous delights as – - – things of desire, reward or something I was ‘missing out on’!  The biggest change in the last two years is that I rarely, rarely eat out and I NEVER get those prepared foods from the fancy deli case anymore.  I fell back in love with cooking and preparing foods and this new love plus eating well has changed my overall disposition for the better.  The last six months since significantly changing my diet have been the most influential – - – the most positive!

(& btw – It has been 1 year, 9 months & 29 days since my last cigarette – March 20, 2010 – thank you Quitter App for iphone)!

fitness-nutrition

In recent months I discovered the term ‘skinny-fat’.  At first I didn’t think it was me but then I recently stumbled upon Kurt Weber’s definition of skinny fat: and it hit home with me. . . or at least me 2 years ago.

Skinny-fat is the condition where someone may appear skinny from afar, however upon closer investigation, the individual is actually a “‘lil softy.” This is due primarily to a lack of muscle mass combined with a piss-poor diet. This person may appear physically fit to the untrained eye, however the fitness and overall health of these individuals is poor at best. They often include smokers, vegetarians (who don’t know what they’re doing), candy/soda cravers, and “cardio-queens” (people who do endless hours of cardio, and wonder why they’re still a “lil-softy”). They often weigh very little, however they have the body fat percentage of an offensive lineman. I don’t want to generalize, however this population is primarily occupied by the female gender – primarily due to 1) genetics 2) exercise misconceptions and 3) a false sense of body image (“i’m a size 3, therefore i’m hot and fit” or “i weigh 115 lbs., therefore i’m hot and fit”).

skinny-fat-chicksfitness-nutritionBy the good fortune of genetics I didn’t have the tell-tale dimply thighs however when I read Kurt’s description, I knew in an instant that my former tendencies kept me – - -  a ‘lil’ soft’!  I used to like to think I was ‘pretty healthy’ but I realize now I was living the skinny-fat definition for many years – - – do you?

If you are feeling frustrated with your current fitness efforts and results – I suggest you take a serious look at your diet.  “Thinking” you eat healthy is not the same as doing.  Writing down everything you put into your mouth for 3 days can be revealing.  Most people are resistant to keeping an accurate food journal – - – it really can be shocking and give you insight, try it.  You may find out that you too are living a false healthy lifestyle.

skinny-fat-food-journal

I also suggest you ask yourself if you are just TRYING to eat healthy or. . . if you are actually committed to eating healthy.  When you are committed to eating healthy and creating a healthy fit body – you will see results.

Animal Protein: fitness, strength & muscles – oh my!

fitness-nutrition-wellnessstrong-women-over-40On July 4th, 2011 I started my first day of my own personal 90-days challenge.  July 4th marks the first day I started my new diet/lifestyle and I must say it is positively hard to believe that six months have come and gone.  It feels amazing to have achieved my goal of overhauling my entire diet and the benefits of my new way of eating make it especially easy to continue with it day-to-day.

In some regards I feel I have been on a health & fitness journey for – ever.  I did Jane Fonda workouts in my living room in high school! I have been seeking a ‘certain look’ – have worked really hard for it many times over the years but I just have not yet been able to obtain the body I see for myself.  I would say over the last 1 1/2 years I have come to discover many terms and ideas that were new to me and actually made impressionable enough impacts to get me to change what was not working for me.

During the 09/10 school year I did my whole foods focused nutrition certification program.  Although I already knew most of the material through other courses and my own research over some 20 years – doing the NTA nutrition program was a great year of intense focus on just the physiological aspects/impacts of food for me.  What happens to food once eaten.  During my program I was introduced to Nora T. Gedgaudas and the idea of an ancestral diet for humans.  Although I was already applying this dietary concept to companion animals – - -  at the time, I could not get on board to try a primal diet for myself – - I was a vegetarian!

In another post I talk about my dietary changes time line since college.  I became a vegetarian at age 22 – - years later I switched to vegan for a few years.  Something was not right with my diet and I certainly was not getting results at the gym so I scheduled a trip to a nutritionist who specializes in analyzing your live blood.  It’s pretty cool I must say.  From how my blood presented itself on the slides – the woman nearly begged me to start eating some real fat & animal protein.  Looking back and remembering the appointments as I write this – one of my complaints was that I was not getting results with my workouts.  It took several visits for her to convince me to eat some real butter, eggs and fish.  This was the starting point of me getting information in regards to the low-fat diet myths – I think it was 1998-99.  Even though my nutritionist was pushing me towards more protein my mind was set that I could get all I needed from other sources.

live-blood-cells-nutrition

My nutrition program repeatedly showed me numerous documentation and studies that show just how important good animal proteins and fats are for how the body functions, repairs and maintains itself.   During our program we also poked and prodded and tested each other to determine nutritional deficiencies.  I came to discover I was not handling sugar very well from carbs and my hormones were out of whack.  In the pretend consult I was asked which would I rather give up???  Potatoes or Pasta/bread – - – and I swear I felt tears swell up in my eyes. (THAT is a significant moment actually – - – addiction). By the end of my program I was aware that I needed to make some dietary changes soon especially since I was coming of age.

Shortly after I graduated my program I discovered bodyrock.tv via a youtube search for home workouts!  This is my full circle!  Over the next year I tinkered here and there with diet and I tinkered here and there with bodyrock.  At one point the bodyrock host Zuzka – aka Zuzana – - – who was tinkering with her own diet – - decided to try a vegetarian diet because she thought it was more healthy to eat less meat and. . .  more humane as well.  I was really excited for her.  But then – she found she needed to add protein powder supplements and I just don’t think those are especially healthy, certainly not real food.  Within a very short time of her diet change I watched her in a workout video that has been burned into my memory – WOW – wow!!!!!  It was absolutely visibly obvious that she had lost strength and stamina very quickly on a vegetarian diet.  This visual had an impact on me.  Zuzka’s body could not handle being vegetarian at her fitness level.  It was in that moment that I realized how vital animal protein actually was in conjunction to Zuzana’s leanness and muscle strength.  She also complained about being tired and she never did that before.  It was just a very noticeable difference in her performance.  She was super frustrated. She switched back to eating lean animal proteins.

July 4th marks the day I stopped being a vegetarian and here are the significant pro points I’ve noticed by adding quality, humanely and pasture raised animal protein to my diet.

1) When I was vegetarian and I would embark on fitness training and ‘working out’ -  I would become starving all the time, almost all day and I could never actually get a satisfied feeling no matter how much I ate.   This was not only annoying and constantly on my mind but it was also time & money consuming.  I am now able to satisfy my hunger easily and sustain it over hours.  I also think I am spending less on food.

2) Now I eat less daily, and less often but the beauty is – I think about food way less AND I no longer feel practically obsessed with food considerations.  It is like a huge burden has been lifted.  I now believe I had a sugar/carb addiction and I didn’t really eat much in the way of “crappy carbs” – it’s just, MY BODY can only handle minimal amounts of ‘sugars’.  I didn’t want to give up certain foods but I have learned a lot about my body in making the attempt to do it for 90 days.  I quickly decided I had no desire to eat the foods I once LOVED!

When asked that day in class if I would give up pasta or potatoes and tears came to my eyes – - – I believe that was an emotional attachment – ie. comfort foods.   That kind of emotional attachment to something can bring about an addiction to something that is not good for your body.  I literally had food cravings from noon til night everyday and I no longer have incessant food cravings or even thoughts about what I am going to eat later – soon – in an hour.  I feel like I am no longer controlled by food – - – which looking back, I think I was.

3) I am now maintaining strength and I can tell my body is being rebuilt stronger and more solidly.  My body composition is changing – for the better.  My skin is improving in every capacity – maybe from the inside out.

4)  I was always tired all the time before – this is no longer my everyday feeling.

I was a staunch vegetarian for 19 years.  I wanted to believe I was eating the best way possible but I was met with several instances that indicated my nutritional needs were not being met.  For many years I ignored the information in front of me in lieu of my feelings and I never got the results I sought physically.  I decided to make a vast change because what I had been doing was not working and not bringing results.  For the first time in my fitness history I feel like I actually have a chance at seeing the body I desire in the mirror… and the addition of animal protein and fats to my diet is what is making the marked difference.

Working out is making me fatter!

jeans-too-tight

OK so although I do not really think working out is making me fatter, I have been experiencing an interesting phenomenon . . . . . . . . since starting my new fitness program 4 weeks ago my jeans are suddenly all too tight!  What?  HOW is that even possible???

On December 05, 2011 I decided to make a dedicated attempt at changing my body composition once and for all, gosh darn it.  I had been working out with bodyrock or similarly with made-up High Intensity Interval Training (h.i.t.t.) workouts for about 4 weeks when suddenly and practically overnight – my jeans all seem to fit more snugly.  That doesn’t make sense right??  I know that some people are just starting out New Year’s Resolutions that include fitness goals & since I am just slightly ahead of some by a few weeks — I hope this post can help any number of people who find they seem to be ‘getting bigger’ by working out.

I was perplexed by this and was lucky enough to have an email exchange with Kurt Weber, of www.weberstrength.com, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist & Strength and Conditioning coach at Cal State Fullerton about this topic.  I think he might know a thing or two about strength and how the body responds to training.

kurt-weber-fitnessKurt Weber

Kurt assured me that my tight jeans reality is something he has witnessed many times in training female clients.  “I’d say more often than not, when I first start training a female, the first few weeks they either . . .”

1) weight stays the same or increases but clothes fit better and they look better

2) weight stays the same and jeans get tighter.

In our immediate satisfaction lifestyle – working hard & “being good” for a few weeks should equal results – right?  Feeling certain that you are accomplishing your goal can feel downright devastating when you see the scale going in the wrong direction but don’t despair – keep going – it’s just a phase.  Kurt indicated when a female client experiences either weight gain on the scale or snausaging of the jeans – she is apt to quit training in fear that it is not working for her or she is going to get huge – - – “but it is at that point where the metabolism begins to increase, and the major results start coming.  I tell all of my clients this at the beginning”. So if you did not know these changes are actually signs of good things to come -know it now and don’t stop your workout plans.

Fortunately I had Bodyrocker Miriam to tell me she went through this experience herself.   I’ve blogged about bodyrocker Miriam a bunch of times because in her story and in her replies to other people’s comments – - I connected with her experiences.  She explained to someone how she had been working out, feeling great and felt on top of the world – - – but when she got on the scale one day to check her progress – - – she felt wounded when see saw that her weight had actually gone up.  She said the scale was quite damaging to how she had been feeling only moments earlier.  I had this experience as well last summer.  We both opted to ditch our scales and our attachments to weight numbers.  We were both ready to try something different than we had done in the past.  Miriam also has sugar handling issues and eats a similar diet.  Miriam is a couple months ahead of me in her bodyrock experience.   In a private conversation recently Miriam told me she also went though a weird phase in the beginning where she honestly didn’t know if she was getting bigger or smaller but she kept at her bodyrock.tv workouts and knew that she was getting stronger.  She said there was a moment of uncertainty then something shifted and her progress forward became certain.  Miriam got great visible results in about 7 weeks of dietary changes and bodyrock workouts which inspired me to get on board.  Miriam has a great positive attitude, she is still going strong & last time we chatted she was down to 20% body fat.

Six months ago I designed my own 90-days personal challenge to change my overall health and body composition.  Out of that challenge I successfully changed my diet radically and I am so happy with what I eat.   I have not only adapted to the changes but have embraced them.  My enthusiasm completely surprised me.  My most recent physical fitness challenge started about 4 weeks ago.  I have had some moments of doubt already – (immediate gratification!!!! ugh!) but I’m going to push through to see the next phase. I just know there is hope for women to recomp their body after 40 – - – I just know it!

p.s.  I forgot to mention:  I do look better naked 4 weeks later. . . so I that’s how I know something good is happening!  edited 01/09/2011

No Time for the Gym??? do bodyrock.tv: [Revisited:2012]

fitness-nutritionHappy New Year Everybody!

Today I’ve decided to re-write ‘my most famous’ post to date…. No Time for the Gym??? do bodyrock.tv. When I wrote that post I was still just a voyeur – today, I actually workout bodyrock style!  To answer your most burning question – - – YES, bodyrock does work just as described and it is totally FREE!!!  The days of clocking massive amounts of cardio are over!

I turn 42 in 10 days.  I don’t believe all the B.S. comments and repeated statements that it’s all downhill after 40…especially for women’s bodies  Stop saying that negative stuff ladies it’s not true!  Since turning 40 I have not been a total slugsworth and do exercise occasionally but I have not noticed a dramatic decrease in metabolism or any of the horrible things I overhear or read women repeating almost everyday.  Part of writing this blog is to hopefully prove that all is not lost physically after 40.

nutrition-counseling-fitness-bestAlright so one day in 2010 I was on youtube searching for at home workouts and I saw these pictures of Bodyrock‘s Zuzana Light … now going by…. Zuzka!  The youtube channel is called charliejames1975 and it is full of amazing bum and cleavage shots.  Be warned because some people have been offended – eye roll!!!  FIRST THOUGHT:  This chick is hot and WHAT is she doing to be THAT smoking HOT????  My second initial thought was – - – omg – said like a bitch!  Really??? What is going to come out of her mouth! I was expecting something Palinesque…but  this delightful and charming woman came on the screen and suddenly I was drawn into her bosom — umm I mean loveliness?!?!?!?!  Seriously, she’s a very sweet and motivating person.  I watched her workout in a few different videos – - – OMG this woman is a power house!  She’s ripped, lean and seriously – - – STRONG!  And – she clearly works hard.   Over time I enjoyed many of her personal chats about life and her descriptions of how many ways her life has improved due to her own personal fitness journey.  If you go back to older videos you can see not just the obvious physical improvements but huge improvements in her confidence and most importantly her inner light began to shine. Although she has never struggled with her weight as many of her followers do, she is a real person who has faced real struggles and challenges and she is easy to connect with no matter who you are or how you THOUGHT you think about things.  Zuzka is a very special person and I feel fortunate that I stumbled upon her youtube channel that one day.   Even though Z is no longer around – she has left behind a legacy of inspiring videos that show a beautiful transformation of person.  We watched a shy girl turn into a confident and vibrant woman.  Her positive energy and coffee talks are what kept bringing me back to bodyrock even though I was not – - – bodyrocking!

During my 90-days personal challenge I started July 4th, 2011 & blogged about here and there – I successfully changed my diet as I intended.  I however got lazy after 60 days in regards to exercise — it was summer – - – I was trying to get by with the bare minimum —- I, I,  I never got into doing bodyrock as intended!  When the fall hit I peeked into bodyrock again – - – still just a voyeur!   I was saddened by the unfortunate news that the creators of the website – a married couple – had decided to part ways.  The site continued.  In November 2011 – - – almost a YEAR – from the day I wrote that first post – - – I saw these two bodyrocker stories — together these women inspired me to – - -  you know – - – Just… do it.  DO IT for 30 days and just see!

Bodyrockers:  Miriam & Alexis

I officially started bodyrocking 12/05/2011 – which means I am at day 27 I think.  My body is definitely more firm and lifted.  I can from personal experience say that bodyrock workouts do work.

One question I often see on Bodyrock is – - – where do I start?  Well – - – at one time you could have followed along on a daily basis but this is no longer the case.  I have decided to start with January 01, 2011 and follow along from here – - – at least for a little while and see how that goes.  Up until recently I was following the 12 days of Christmas and I was really excited about them – but that time has passed already!  Moving on!  Bodyrock has a wealth of amazing workout videos and ideas to pick and choose from.  It is an outright shame that Zuzana-Zuzka is out of the picture but I must move on for now until she decides what she’s going to do next.  There are 2-3 years worth of videos to use so I have stopped my crying and started doing older workouts – - – so if you want to start bodyrocking — follow me or just pick a workout from the website and start today!

Click on the photo to take you to the workout — Zuzka has encouraging words for this workout!

This is called an exercise challenge.  The goal is to complete 200 reps on each leg – - – lunge back, kick-up with one leg for X amt of reps and then the other leg for a total of 200 on each side.  Record the time it takes you to complete this exercise.  Z did 20 on each side and it took her 17 minutes and 57 seconds.  You should go to the website because she has a very endearing p.s. for her bodyrockers to help get through this WO!

I do recommend getting a gymboss timer – - – or something like it as soon as you can but  – - – do not make that your excuse for not starting —  don’t wait until you can get one – get creative.  Aside from bodyrock, since I love to dance and dance often I take ideas I get from bodyrock and then set my timer for intervals – - – this way I make sure to take 10 second breaks and then maybe dance my ass off for 50 secs for 15 minutes!  I just try to have FUN and I’ve found combining my gymboss with my at home dance parties equals a good extra interval training session!

Can you get a smoking hot body by doing bodyrock alone?  ONLY?  For only 12-30 minutes a day?  I do think it is possible – - – if you actually do the workouts and follow along — and have a proper diet.  I don’t think you can ever make up for a poor diet with exercise!  Aside from doing bodyrock – - – or your own version of HIIT [high intensity interval training] – - – or any kind of workout program – - – it will only cover 20-30% of what your body composition will be.  The other 70-80% is all diet.  In my opinion bodyrock has been unable to provide proper advice on nutrition.  Zuzana has made significant strides regarding food over the last several years but is still caught up in an old and dated media driven way of thinking… plus, as I mentioned Zuzka is no longer on bodyrock – at least for now.

I am finding success with my body composition using a combination of a low glycemic – grain & legume free diet and doing workouts with or similar to bodyrock workouts.  I am only at day 27 today so – - – I can’t say that any miracles have taken place but I can say that SOMETHING is happening.  There are a few topics I would like to write about and share as I continue this journey that I hope will help others to start somewhere.

I hate the gym so I had to find an alternative.  If you actually don’t feel you have the time to make the trip to the gym and all that entails – - – consider working out at home with bodyrock.  You can be done with your workout usually in the amount of time it takes me to drive from my house and park at the gym.  If you workout intensely during the short amount of time it takes to do a bodyrock workout – - – YES, you can get amazing physical results with JUST working out 12-30 minutes 5-6 days a week.  Warning – it gets contagious and you will not want to miss a day of working out!  I once again give gratitude and thanks to bodyrock and all the bodyrockers who have made that community strong.  I hope in 2012 it all comes back together for the greater good.

On December 05, 2011 I took before photos – - – it is my intention to post progress photos here on my blog to show all women approaching 40 – 40 or Over 40 that – - – we still have the ability to change our physical form to firm and sexy regardless of age or what you’ve been told a thousand times in some form of media nonsense!  I hope you will check back to find inspiration at my blog and wish me luck in breaking the after 40 curse myth that women think is out there!!!

I’ll post my time for this workout!!!

fitness-nutrition-wellness

I will post when I can as I continue on this forward motion towards greater strength, less body fat and a more firm – firmer overall composition!  Wishing you and yours a grand new year!!!!!
